The formula has proved a hit: Pop-Up Magazine consistently sells out 3,000 person capacity venues in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Oakland, and New York at ticket prices ranging from $25 to $95. Whether it breaks even or not, McGray won’t say, but it’s attracted buzz and capital that enabled him to launch a print publication in 2014, California Sunday Magazine, that is bundled with newspapers in the state. McGray says he’s raised a little over $3.5 million from investors including Emerson Collective, Bloomberg Beta, Slow Ventures, Chris Anderson, Chris Cox, Nion McEvoy and Neal Baer.
